Merry Christmas

Friday 22nd December 2006 was the clubs Christmas Party. There was a great turnout and Sensei Hannah and Christine had prepared a wonderful buffet spread.

There were party games for the youngsters and Helen kept the music pumping.

At the end of the evening Dai Sensei David Smith presented three awards to the following students

Student of The Year 2006 - Jo Moorby

Student of the Year - Runner Up - 2006 - Jamie Long

Most improved new-comer 2006 - Alexe McCartney

Congratulations to you all, you have all worked very hard this year and made all the senseis proud.

Keep it up and roll on 2007 !!

See you all in the New Year

Kyu Grade Success

Well done to all Kyu grades who passed on 10th December. The Normanton venue was a little disorienting for some and the mat setup made some techniques a little tricky, but all in all everyone who passed, passed well.

Special congratulations to Josh and Luke, our newest Red Belts. You're on your way now guys.

Also big it up for new Brown belts Jo Moorby and Jamie Long. This time next year it'll be the BIG ONE.

This time round saw Sensei Simon and Sensei Mel participate on some of the grading panels and they heard a wide variety of complimentary remarks about Hanshin students. There were, however, a few negative comments.

Some people let themselves down with their stances and for others it was terminology. Nerves can effect everybody, but your senseis know you know your stuff. Don't be scared or shy. If you are unsure of some terminology, then ask your sensei during training, it's why they are there. At the end of the day, these are things you can fix. If you don't have a syllabus, then get one, see your sensei.

Behaviour was mentioned by Shian Ann. It could have been better. Remember, you are a guest at another club's Dojo, you should behave the same there as if you had been invited to Shian's club. Sometimes nothing will be said to you it is your sensei who will get disciplined. Don't let it happen guys.

New Black Belts

Abbie and Ellisha have swelled the ranks of our cadet Shodans by going Black Belt on 3rd December 2006. Everyone at the club is hugely thrilled for them. Well done senseis.

Rick also successfully attained his Predan grade.

Saiyuuki also saw Lizzie and Micki succeed in their Black Belt grading. Well done senseis.

Sensei Simon Sandan

Everyone was overjoyed as Sensei Simon humbly revealed (under duress) that he had succesfully attained his 3rd Dan belt in Wado Ryu on 26th November 2006. Well done Sensei, we are all truly, truly delighted.

I am sure that your example will continue to inspire us to strive for our black belts and beyond.

Of course the traditional reward of "Sandan Soaking" was performed by Dai Sensei David Smith.

WYSOK November 2006

Photos now in members area (thanks Tony Sutton & Sensei Mel)

Jamie Long gave an outstanding performance in ground wrestling and kumite in this November's WYSOK Tournament at Thornes Park. As well as lifting the first place trophy in BOTH categories he went on to compete and win in the Champion of Champions trophy for BOTH as well . Fantastic effort Jamie, we are all so proud of you. This just shows you've definately got what it takes.

Also, well done to Bethany for lifting her first ever Tournament Trophy, First place in Kumite, GO Bethany!!!.

Jo Moorby and Martin aslo picked up trophies for kata and sparring.

A big congratulations to all trophy and medal winners. You really did Hanshin proud. WYSOK is a much bigger and more psychologically challenging event than the Interclub and trophies are much harder to collect since you usually compete against a larger number of contestants.

Well done Bailey - 50 Kicks in 2.5 Minutes (1 every 3 Seconds)

Would like to see some of the adults manage that.

In the last week Christine and Joseph Ward performed their sponsored activites.

Christine did a sponsored "Kick-a-thon" whilst her son Joseph completed 300 star jumps.

Pete Fox undertook the "big ask" of 200 press-ups in 15 minutes. Actually he ended up doing just over 230, just to make sure.

Now that's what I call determined!!

Well done to you all, watch this space for an update on the current total of funds raised.

October InterClub

On Sunday 1st October, Saiyuuki hosted the closing Interclub of 2006 at Sharlston. Newmillerdam successfully completed the triple (Well done guys), but the margin is being shaved little by little. This time the Dammers laid claim to 24 trophies, Hanshin 12 and Saiyukki 8. Well done to all competitors and trophy winners from all clubs.

Statistically, Hanshin is consistantly increasing it's share of the pot to Newmillerdam's expense, Saiyukki is maintaining a level course.

Our strongest event is Solo Kata where we took almost 40% of the silverware this time, Kumite was also strong this time thanks to Ellie and Frankie stepping up to the challenge (27% this time compared to 16% in July & March). We also just narrowly missed out in some Kata tie-breakers for 3rd places.

One thing is certainly true, we're improving each and every time.

If we can turn round TEAM KATA were really going to make massive in roads into winning the shield. Example, The Dammers took six trophies by coming first and second, Saiyukki took three. If Hanshin had taken all nine available the above table would read a lot different. We only fielded one team though, so we need to give it some thought.

Still, all being said and done, it's about taking part and enjoying the day and the camaraderie. As usual the atmosphere was electric, especially during the sparring. There are some photos in the Members Gallery with a "bonus feature" MOVIES!!!.

Shian Ann and Sensei David have already expressed their congratulations, gratitude and pride both at the event and in the guestbook. I'm sure everyone would like to thank them and the other senseis for the organisation that goes into making the day run smoothly for everyone's benefit.

A big thank you to Mandy and the Kitchen crew for providing a much appreciated service throughout the day.

If I had to summerize the event in one word it would be fellowship. I was so impressed to see cross club encouragement throughout the entire contest.

{I recently stumbled across this Okinawan proverb, and I think it's apt.

Ichariba Chode (ee-CHA-ree-ba CHOD-day)

Once we meet and talk, we are brothers and sisters.

See Y'all at the WYSOK Tournament I hope.}

Tile Smash

Sensei Mel Charles led the way last Thursday (21/9) and performed his sponsored task of a tile smash. A big thank you to everyone that sponsored him (esp. all at Morrisons).

Mel managed to raise over £150 pounds "single handed" which is a tremendous kick start to our fund raising effort.

Over the course of the next few weeks our remaining students will be performing a variety of sponsored activities to add to the club fund.

Hanshin would again like to offer our sincere gratitude to everyone taking part and especially their sponsors.

!! THANK YOU !!

PS - No furniture was harmed during the filming of this exercise.

PPS - Because Sensei's hand moved too quickly we could not actually manage to capture him mid-smash. (we're karate-ka, not photographers after all)

Sponsor Forms

Be sure to volunteer for a sponsored event to help raise funds for the club.

Adults can do a sponsored tile break, Juniors and Adults can do an endurance task (e.g. Kibadachi for 15mins in a 1 hour period). If you are unable to do anything due to injury, then at least take a form and get your friends to sponsor one of the Senseis.

Sensei Mel has the forms. See him at break!!

Well done everyone !!

Hanshin's kyu students had a fantastic grading on Sunday 10th September 2006. Everyone passed!

Also, Rick was awarded his Gold Tag (Awesome).

Marge and Peter Boocock successfully graded to 1st Dan on 3rd Sept 2006.

And from Ackworth (Saiyuuki) Lee was awarded his Senior Shodan and Sammiy achieved her Shodan Cadet. New Predans are Stacie, Lizzie, Abbie and Mickey.

Kelly also successfully attained her Gold Tag.

Recruitment Drive

We currently need more white belts to maintain the balance of experience and fuel our future success.

Any ideas welcome. Discuss with the adults at break.
